- Henricksen Experience Center, Washington, D.C.
Henricksen, a leading national furniture dealership, recently rebranded its Washington, D.C. location, formerly known as COFCO, to align with its national identity. Alongside the rebrand, they also opened a multifunctional Experience Center, designed to be a community hub for networking, collaboration, education, and showcasing innovative workspaces. Their prior showroom space did not provide an ideal environment for clients or employees. It needed to evolve into a dynamic, inviting space that reflected modern work trends and engaged visitors more meaningfully. “A shift in client expectations and market demands has really heightened the need for a space that could serve not only as a display for furniture but also as a community-driven experience center for learning, networking, and collaboration,” said Joan Waters, General Manager, Henricksen Washington, D.C. The Henricksen team focused on creating a space that emphasizes function over form. While the updated Experience Center showcases various Henricksen product lines, the primary focus is on fostering a community-centered environment. The space is designed to showcase a variety of work environments, from traditional workstations to flexible, collaborative spaces, helping clients visualize modern office configurations that encourage productivity and collaboration. When we moved to the new Experience Center, we were branded as Henricksen, but we remained the same team. "Through the design of the space, we aimed to showcase how well we knew and understood the DC market," said Kelly Hogan, Vice President of Operations, Henricksen, Washington, DC. To further support a community-centered environment, the Experience Center was designed around iconic Washington, D.C. locations, representing different working styles. For example, the formal conference room is designated the “Library of Congress” and features rich wood, soft luggage leather, a bust of Washington, and gold frames of the United States presidents and the CEO of Henricksen. In contrast, the all-day café is designated “Union Market” and features industrial lighting and bench seating to reflect the atmosphere of Union Market itself. The new Experience Center is more than just a showroom—it’s positioned as a workhorse space for the community. The Henricksen team emphasized creating a space to host various events, from continuing education units (CEUs) and lunch-and-learn sessions to happy hours and nonprofit board meetings. This approach allows for deeper engagement with both internal teams and external clients, providing a platform for learning, ideating, and networking. “It’s a space for gathering, creating, and learning” said Waters, “helping people understand how to build environments that draw employees back to the workplace” The rebrand from COFCO to Henricksen also allows the Washington, D.C. team to benefit from Henricksen’s national footprint. By integrating into a larger brand, the team can better support clients with multi-location needs, offering a seamless experience across regions. This is particularly valuable for clients ranging from local nonprofits seeking cost-effective solutions to large corporations with offices located across the country. “The brand’s size and scale ensure we can handle projects of any scope,” said Joanna Verdi, Vice President of Sales in Washington, D.C. The new space has already generated excitement internally, with plans to host numerous industry tours, community service events, and educational opportunities. By creating a versatile and welcoming environment, Henricksen is showcasing its product offerings, cultivating relationships, and building a sense of community within the local market. - Focus Financial Partners
Focus Financial Partners wanted to construct a new office space they could customize to meet their needs and furnish to promote their multi-faceted culture. They needed it to be flexible and easily adaptive to the future growth of the company. “It was important that it fully supported and accommodated our increasingly expanding company with more than adequate office space, while also providing a high-tech workspace that encouraged interaction and stimulated creativity,” said Queen Kamani, Executive Assistant to Ruediger Adolf, the Founder and CEO of Focus Financial Partners. Focus Financial Partners worked with the architectural firm Ted Moudis Associates to design the new space. Once the overall layout was finalized, Henricksen was brought into the process for the furniture planning and selection. Several common areas, hoteling spaces, and individual private offices needed to be furnished. Focus wanted to re-use several existing furnishings in the new design, including some workstations and conference tables. Henricksen met with Ted Moudis Associates and Focus Financial Partners to review the architectural plans before presenting several furniture layouts and product selections. They also invited Focus to see some of the proposed furniture options at local showrooms and offices of other clients. Reflecting on the proceess Kamani shares, “Henricksen worked closely with our architects, contractors and project managers throughout the process, attending weekly meetings and participating on various conference calls. Once we finalized our furniture selections, Henricksen ordered, tracked and ensured the arrival and installation of all furniture to the specification of the architectural plan.” Henricksen also facilitated the re-use of an old conference table by stripping and refinishing it to match the new designs. This enabled Focus Financial Partners to retain a beautiful piece of furniture and make it fit the look and feel of their new space. Henricksen was able to blend existing and new furniture to furnish an open, airy office space that met the client’s vision. In addition to workstations and private offices, their new office now has huddle rooms, a game room, and a beautiful café kitchen. “In unification with the open indoor outdoor and hoteling floor plan concept design, comprising of wall plant greenery, glass partitions and doors throughout the space…,” said Kamani; “The selected furniture was perfectly in line with the overall floor design with its array of textures and colors, dimensions and style.” The furniture in the new space encourages collaboration with open workstations, seating and lounge areas, café-style booths, and conference room tables that can easily be connected and disconnected, rearranged and stored away. The fabrics and finishes blend into the office design by pulling out the blues, greens and golds of the company’s logo. - Philipp Lithographing Co.
Philipp Lithographing Co. (Philipp Litho), a family-owned printing and packaging company located in Grafton, WI, was expanding. The expansion and renovation included a 26,000 square-foot warehouse addition, a 3,600 square-foot office addition, and a renovation of their existing 5,000 square-foot office space. The overarching goal was to create a more modern and professional, employee-friendly office while maintaining a family-run, traditional feel. Their existing office furniture was mostly heavy-duty golden oak pieces from the 1960s and 1970s that no longer suited their way of working. The location also lacked enough conference rooms and meeting spaces to support their growing team and client-facing needs. They did want to retain certain traditional design elements, such as the warm wood tones, but also needed the space to feel modern and efficient. Their new workstations required customized designs to accommodate many printed documents and packaging materials. Philipp Litho selected Design to Construct (D2C) to lead the architectural design and construction of the new spaces. As part of this process, D2C brought in Henricksen to help them create an all-encompassing furniture package for Philipp Litho and worked as a team to help bring Philipp Litho’s vision for the furniture to life. “Philipp Litho’s design vision went hand in hand with the overall style of the building,” said Alaina Bernarde, Interior Designer, D2C. ““We took the time to go through each space to make sure the pieces and furniture layout meet the needs and functions of the end users. We chose wood tones and fabrics for the furniture that coordinated with the new interior finish materials that were specified.” National Waveworks workstations were selected, balancing durability and design. Wood skins were used on the outside of the workstations to match the company’s traditional aesthetic and height-adjustable desks were specified to meet modern ergonomic needs. The private offices were outfitted with Gunlocke chairs and high-end traditional pieces to create a sophisticated yet functional environment. Where possible, Henricksen and D2C’s designers worked with Philipp Litho to reuse existing furniture, such as incorporating some existing seating and reusing the base of a conference table, adding a new top for a refreshed look. The project also included custom touches like a demountable wall system with magnetic panels. These walls encased the conference room, and the magnetic panels allowed the clients to hang up their lithographing plans for their meetings. There also are other architectural walls throughout the space, adding both functionality and a modern aesthetic. The collaboration between D2C, Henricksen, and the client was smooth, with constant communication and quick resolution of any punch list items. Henricksen’s documentation of furniture standards and finishes ensured the project deliverables were clear and helped keep the project on track. “Cammy keeps the client’s best interests at heart,” said Bernarde of Henricksen Account Manger Cammy Harvey. “She is the first person I communicate with on each furniture job. Her attendance at each meeting, whether onsite or at Henricksen, ensures we were making progress. She gets questions answered and searches for the right solution based on her past experiences.” The end result is a new space for Philipp Litho that is both visually appealing and highly functional for current and future employees. - Cedarburg School District
The Cedarburg School District, comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, worked with CG Schmidt to complete a thorough master planning process resulting in a $59.8M referendum passed in 2018 to renovate these facilities. Despite a competitive bid process, Henricksen was selected as the District's furniture partner based on experience, price, and an existing trusted relationship; Henricksen had previously worked with the District to update some of their old furniture to more ergonomic and flexible options. The main priorities for the renovations were to manage an increase in enrollment, develop the teaching and learning environments to be more flexible and ergonomic, and enhance safety and security. In addition, the district wanted to create a set of furniture and design standards that could be used across all the schools for consistency.“One of the goals was to create flexible learning spaces, and that’s super dependent on furniture,” said Kirstin Collins, Director of Technology and Assessment, Cedarburg School District. “We also wanted to create a standards catalog, so that when it comes time to purchase again, we know what to buy and going forward everything will look the same.” “There was a lack of consistency across the grade levels and buildings, meaning you couldn’t exchange furniture across those spaces,” said Todd Bugnacki, Superintendent, Cedarburg School District. Most of the existing furniture was difficult to move and reconfigure, offering teachers and students little flexibility.“It was vintage,” said Collins, “A lot of pieces were not in the best of shape and not quite ergonomically correct or the right size for the classrooms.” The planning team attended EdSpaces, an educational furniture tradeshow and conference where they saw presentations from different furniture manufacturers, which helped them narrow in on the types of furniture that they wanted to bid as part of the project. After being selected as the furniture provider, Henricksen helped finish the overall project programming. “They jumped in and gathered more extensive program information from teachers and staff,” said Cindy Gall, Director of Interior Design, Groth Design Group, “They brought in a variety of test furniture and gathered feedback. They also assisted us with specifications, drawings and renderings.” Cindy Gall, Director of Interior Design, Groth Design Group adds, “Henricksen provides exemplary service to our clients. I feel 100% confident bringing them to a bidding list or an interview. Their experience is exuded through and through. I feel great when they are explaining their process to a client, and I know that we have the same vision. They make sure they are an extension of me and my design team.” At the elementary schools, furniture was provided for the library media center (LMC), classrooms, offices, and maker spaces. At Webster Middle School there was an update to the cafeteria space, an office remodel and a new LMC. The High School renovation supplied new classrooms for math and English, small group collaboration spaces, a new cafeteria, a whole new tech education department, new art rooms, maker space, and robotics area. The district has now created a playbook outlining what they were trying to achieve with the renovations. It spells out the “why” around flexible and moveable furniture and will offer teachers templated layouts for certain scenarios, depending on what they are trying to achieve in the classroom. “The book of standards is helping,” said Collins. “It solves the purpose of repairs by specifying who we contact and spelling out the make and model of the furniture.” This enables the new grounds manager or any staff to be able to go the book and see who to contact and what to buy. In addition, standard furniture selections are listed as a resource for teachers and staff to reference when new furniture is needed. All the new furniture is flexible, ensuring there are size options for kids of all grades. Even the library shelves have wheels and can be moved. It has allowed the staff to create a culture and climate that didn’t exist in the prior environment. “We were looking at a way to create an environment that was fully inclusive and provide teachers with greater opportunities to move the student achievement needle,” said Bugnacki. The new spaces allow teachers to explore and better meet the needs of the students. “I see kids doing exactly what we wanted them to do – collaborating and breaking down silos,” said Bugnacki. - Henricksen Nashville Showroom
In July 2023, Henricksen saw significant change in its Tennessee locations, including a transition from the Synergy to the Henricksen brand. This rebrand was essential to articulating Henricksen's national capabilities and experience, as well as its new identitiy and committment to the Tennessee market. As part of the rebrand, Henricksen relocated itis Nashville experience center to the first floor of Panattoni’s prestigious 1030 Music Row facility. Just a block from Edgehill Village, this building stands proud as Nashville’s inaugural mass timber frame construction. The relocation gave the team a chance to exhibit diverse work styles that align with the ever-changing corporate landscape. It was critical to present a broad spectrum of work configurations to our clients and empower the Nashville team to work in ways that best suit their needs. The building’s mass timber frame, golden door pulls, and smoked glass lend a hospitality vibe to the overall design, aligning perfectly with local trends. When designing the space, these features heavily influenced furniture and accessories choices. As the first building of its kind in Nashville, Henricksen wanted to present clients with a hospitality-inspired workplace that is both stunning and functional. In a world where hybrid and remote work are the norm, Henricksen's state-of-the-art experience center in Nashville can help clients explore ways to attract people back to their offices. - Henricksen Minneapolis Showroom
After seventeen years at our previous showroom, Henricksen decided it was time for a fresh start! The team sought a new location where there was a connection to a neighborhood community and our clients, where amenities were plentiful, including access to healthy food choices, outdoor space, and a gym, where secure and easily accessible parking facilities would ensure the safety of our employees and visitors, and where the location elevated the Henricksen brand and showcased the team's capabilities. The bar was high, but soon the team discovered The TractorWorks Building. Located at 800 Washington Avenue North, in the historic North Loop neighborhood, TractorWorks embraces a rich history dating back to its 1902 construction while being at the forefront of creating innovative workspaces for Minneapolis professionals. The brick, timber, and concrete buildings were repurposed in the 1960s to become a merchandise mart and office space and were most recently renovated in 2018, making it one of the first creative commercial buildings in The North Loop. Naturally, the relocation to the North Loop came with its challenges. The team was determined to remain cost-neutral to our existing lease to allow for new technology expenses that would best support the changing needs of our hybrid workforce. It was also critical to balance the need for a sophisticated space with the desire to keep products out of landfills; this was accomplished by creatively reusing 60% of existing products. Working to integrating products from nearly twenty manufacturers into a cohesive and inspirational environment, the team concentrated on providing an adaptable space supporting collaborative and focused work. The new Henricksen showroom is a maker's space, a place to welcome partners and clients, to learn, experiment, and grow. May 1, 2024 (Washington, DC, May 1, 2024) Henricksen is pleased to announce the opening of their Washington DC Experience Center located on the 5th floor of 1725 I Street and the rebrand of COFCO, a Henricksen Company (“COFCO”), to Henricksen. The Henricksen Washington DC Experience Center will serve as a place for the community and the AEC industry to gather for events, meetings, continuing education, and networking. It will also provide staff with a refreshed work environment that enables them to showcase diverse and innovative ways of working. The new space will facilitate an interactive experience and serve as catalyst for the industry and local community to see workspaces in a different way. COFCO was acquired by Henricksen in 2022 because of an alignment in core values and a shared vision for the future. The rebrand of COFCO, to Henricksen in Washington DC will bring national name recognition to the talented local team and enhance their established regional industry relationships. “When we move to the new Experience Center, we will be branded Henricksen, but we are the same team. We wanted to showcase how well we know and understand the DC market through the design of the space,” said Kelly Hogan, Vice President of Operations, Henricksen, Washington DC. The new space is designed around different iconic Washington DC locations which represent different styles of working. As an example, the formal conference room is designated the “Library of Congress” and features rich woods, soft luggage leather, a bust of Washington, and gold frames of the United States presidents and the CEO of Henricksen. In contrast, the all-day café is designated “Union Market” and features industrial lighting and bench seating to reflect the atmosphere of Union Market itself. “This Experience Center and the rebrand are game changers for us,” said Joan Waters, General Manager, Henricksen, Washington DC. “The space will help our clients and partners better understand today’s work environments and the rebrand will provide more recognition in the market as Henricksen is a prominent national brand.” The Henricksen name will be reflected on all Washington DC materials beginning in May, including bid responses, presentations, invoices, email addresses, and website. “What excites me about the rebrand is having the name recognition and being able to leverage the experience and resources nationally that we need to grow locally,” said Joanna Verdi, Vice President of Sales, Washington DC. The opening of the new Experience Center and the rebrand of COFCO to Henricksen will pave the way for future growth in the Washington DC market. Stay tuned for news of future events to be held at the new Henricksen Experience Center, including an open house later this summer. Fortunately, a large parcel of land that previously belonged to the Pope Farm Conservancy was donated and enabled the District to construct a new school to serve grades K-4. New furniture was needed for all spaces in the new school and, because they were starting from scratch, they could establish brand new standards that addressed flexibility, accessibility, and collaboration to create a true 21st century learning environment. “We, along with Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA), interviewed a number of furniture vendors and we chose Henricksen,” said Bill Eberhardt, Building Projects Manager for Middleton Cross Plains Area School District. The team at Henricksen observed teachers in their existing classrooms, and noted what worked and what their challenges were. The spaces seemed cramped and the furniture was not flexible. There was also not much variety of seating for the students who needed alternative options. Henricksen deployed three different pilot classrooms at the existing elementary schools in the district. This allowed the teachers to test out new ways of teaching, as well as ask the students about what they liked and why they liked it before making selections for the new school. Student and teacher assessments of the classrooms was important to the planning process, as they would be the ones spending the most time in these new spaces. “The teachers were really open to trying new things and also got feedback from the students themselves,” said Julie Disch, Senior Interior Designer, Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA). Multiple meetings were held throughout the design process and Henricksen would present different furniture and layout concepts based on their observations. Eberhardt shares, “They would get a concept down and then bring in the furniture so we could test it out. The Henricksen staff is very attentive. They were very patient with all the different choices and costing options.” The interior of the school was designed around pollinators – drawing inspiration from the conservancy land – and how important they are to human survival. Each grade wing was given a pollinator or plant used by the pollinators to define their area, referred to as a pod. As an example, 1st grade is the humming bird and 2nd grade is bee balm. Those two species really rely on each other. The school uses the conservancy site and the classroom pods to help connect the students to the real-world concepts of prairies. “We picked out ottomans that would create a flower,” said Disch. In the kindergarten wing hexagonal shaped ottomans mimic bumble bee hives. The finishes selected tie into the whole concept of pollinators as well. In the classrooms, there are different tiers of seating, from floor cushions to standing-height wobble stools, and everything is on casters so that even the kids can move the furniture. Disch explains, “The school is really unique because they don’t offer 1:1 classroom chairs for the students. They have about 15 traditional chairs and then use floor cushions and standing-height stools to supplement. They really pushed the envelope when it came to student choice and student preference.” Jessica Taylor, Principal, Middleton Pope Elementary School adds, “the children love the novelty of the shape of some of the tables, like the puzzle shape.” There are also quadrilateral tables, whiteboard tables, and low tables so students can sit on lily pads on the floor that are very popular for the kids and teachers. Outside of the classrooms there are collaboration spaces offering additional flexibility and student choice. “The children have the option to use these spaces beyond the classroom and it’s really fun for them,” said Taylor. “The furniture is comfortable, but durable, and feels homey to a lot of kids and adults.” Allsteel’s Rise tiered lounge pieces were specified for these collaborative areas. “You walk by, and kids are laying on different levels as they are reading,” said Taylor. “The system is really functional but also really comfortable and it gives kids an alternative space to do their work and engage differently.” In other spaces throughout the school the furniture is on casters to promote maximum flexibility. As an example, the bookcases in the library are on casters so that they can easily be adjusted or moved to accommodate new room layouts. The teachers and staff also have height-adjustable desks, and even standing-height tables in all the classrooms. The staff, just like the students, appreciate the versatility of the furniture. At the conclusion of the project there were happy students, teachers, and staff. Taylor shares, “the multi-function of the pieces is really nice. They really thought of everything.” Share Copy link LinkedIn Facebook Pinterest Project Stats Completed 2020 Location Verona, WI Square Footage 113,000 Partners & Manufacturers SFI | Systems Furniture Installation, EUA | Eppstein Uhen Architects, Allsteel, Formcore, Humanscale, National, SitOnIt, SitOnIt Seating, VS America, Wisconsin Bench Manufacturers Used Middleton Pope Farm Elementary Verona, WI Start Your Project First name* Last name* Email* Company Phone Location (City, State) Upload a File (if needed) Upload a File Message* Submit Project Experience Legacy Church Legacy Church in Tennessee was looking to renovate its space and partnered with Henricksen to help deliver on a comprehensive project scheduled for completion in 2022. The building design sought to honor the Forest County Potawatomi values and culture. Natural elements like exposed wood were used and bright colors were taken from the Forest County Potawatomi logo. The footprint even mimics the shape of an eagle in flight. The building was programmed to meet the diverse needs of the community from the elders to the younger generations. All spaces, including the 20,000 square foot gymnasium, 8,000 square foot pool, classrooms, and shared spaces had to serve the entire community. To accommodate this diverse set of users, the furniture needed to be accessible and accommodating. Universal Design – the design of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability – became a critical consideration. “We kept that at the forefront of our minds for all the furniture in the building,” said Tara Christian, Director of Interior Design at RAMLOW/STEIN Architecture + Interiors. For the community spaces, the furnishings are easily moved, accommodate different activities, and able to withstand use from a wide range of ages. Lightweight and adjustable height seating became the standard. To ensure durability, vinyl and non-woven textiles were selected and a moisture barrier or added coatings were used to ensure they withstood heavy use in all spaces, but especially the pool area. The furniture pieces were also chosen to work with the overall architecture and interior design of the building. Vibrant colors were selected to reflect the colors of the Forest County Potawatomi logo. The workstations and table tops used wood-like finishes to create that visual of wood and warmth on the surfaces. “We made sure that we could include the warmth of wood wherever possible,” said Christian, “Because this space is up in the north woods, nestled in the forest, having wood as an interior finish created a sense of warmth and brought the outside in.” Henricksen participated in design meetings and reviewed furniture specifications and fabric selections remotely because of COVID restrictions. “They had to send all the finishes up to Crandon so we could walk through them over the phone,” said Christian. “They gave of their time immensely.” Henricksen also used the “Designing with You” process on the project, using design tools like CET software to remotely draw and space plan right along with the architectural firm and the client in real time. Henricksen furnished the entire building, including the natatorium, game room, pediatric therapy space, training room, huddle spaces, teaching labs, lobby, woodshop room, child rearing, a community room used for large group instruction, and an administrative area. The administrative space is an open, long corridor. To best fit and serve the needs of the users, adjustable height corner clamp surfaces are used to accommodate base board heating vents. A privacy screen was also installed to prevent the loss of items that would drop under the tables. Christian syas of the collboration with Henricksen, “this project is a really good example of how Henricksen is a full-service firm, they can complete a project from RFP through to the end. They were really attentive and present throughout the process.” Share Copy link LinkedIn Facebook Pinterest Project Stats Completed 2021 Location Lincoln, WI Square Footage 105,000 Partners & Manufacturers Resource One, Ramlow/Stein, Greenfire Management Manufacturers Used Forest County Potawatomi Community Center Lincoln, WI Start Your Project First name* Last name* Email* Company Phone Location (City, State) Upload a File (if needed) Upload a File Message* Submit Project Experience News Corp News Corp brings engaging content to the world through trusted publications such as The Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post. When the team at Henricksen submitted a proposal to refresh their New York City office for 240 people, they did not know that by the time the job was awarded, media, workplace, and businesses worldwide would be staggering through a global pandemic. “Completing a project for one of the world’s largest media empires — during a pandemic, no less — requires a lot of focus, great products, and much perseverance” stsates Joanne Hickman, Business Development Manager at Henricksen. Henricksen’s New York team maintained momentum on the project in partnership with the design firm ENV. “This project kicked off before the full lockdown happened in 2020. We were all tumbling through a new experience of remote working and design meetings over video calls,” shares Annie Lee, Principal at ENV, “The Henricksen team was exceptionally efficient and shared knowledge and research that we could rely on.” Together, the teams coordinated all the major project partners via Zoom, undertook supply chain challenges, tackled labor limitations, and managed an install that could not disrupt workflow. The Henricksen team partnered with Allsteel to determine Altitude A8 benching was the best solution for the workstations, while the private offices became a blend of Allsteel Approach and Involve. Allsteel’s flexible and mobile solutions became even more critical to support social distancing requirements. “Joanne was always there to navigate the unknown roads of the pandemic furniture world,” continues Lee. As the project drew to completion, Henricksen’s operational strengths stood out. As resources were deployed, obstacles removed, and problems solved, the News Corp team could return to a new work environment conducive to supporting the fast-paced nature of their business.
